John R. Sutton, Esq. has been practicing law in South Florida for over 36 years. After graduating from the University of Miami School of Law in 1972, Mr. Sutton began a career in litigation at age 24 as In-House Counsel for Travelers Insurance Company. Shortly thereafter John entered private litigation practice in 1973, later becoming a sole practitioner in 1977. In 1985, after 13 years of trial practice, John earned Civil Trial Board Certification.
Mr. Sutton was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 8th, 1947. He attended High School in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, and studied Political Science at Gettysburg College, where he earned his B.A. in 1969. Mr. Sutton then moved to sunny South Florida for law school at the University of Miami, where he earned his Juris Doctor Degree in 1972, and has lived here ever since. During law school John interned at the State Attorney's Office for two years.
Mr. Sutton is a member of the Florida Bar Association, the American Bar Association, American Trial Lawyers Association, Florida Justice Association, Dade County Bar Association, and the Trial Bar of the Federal District Court - Southern District of Florida, where he was permanently admitted. He is also licensed with the Federal District Court for the Middle District of Florida, Southern District of Alabama, United States Tax Court, 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, and United States Supreme Court.
Throughout his vast legal career, Mr. Sutton has been admitted to practice pro hac vice in numerous jurisdictions throughout the United States. This practice has included trials, hearings, and special appearances in the Middle Federal District of California, Eastern District of Louisiana, Southern District of Texas, Northern District of Georgia, Federal District Court for Maryland, Southern District of New York in Manhattan, Superior Court of Iowa, Northern District of Florida, Middle District of Florida, and Circuit Courts in New Hampshire and Alabama.
Mr. Sutton has argued in from of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals on several occasions. Many of the cases John has handled have resulted in new established Florida appellate law. John resides in Coral Gables, Florida, and has one daughter, Melissa, a recent graduate of the University of Florida.
Jose Ruben Bejel, Esq. is Cuban-American and a native Floridian. After graduating from Coral Gables Senior High, Jose earned an Associate in Arts degree from Miami-Dade Community College, and a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and Political Science from Florida International University. While attending Florida International, Jose participated in various community projects including internships at the Dade County State Attorney’s Office, and Dade County Public Defenders Office. After working with the state attorneys and public defenders in Miami and seeing their impact on the community, Jose knew he was destined for a career in law.
In 1997, Jose enrolled at the Shepard Broad Law Center at Nova Southeastern University, located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. While at Nova Southeastern Law, Jose participated in several activities geared toward a career as a trial lawyer in private practice, and also served as a special court-appointed guardian ad litem. Jose graduated from Nova Southeastern with a Juris Doctor in 2000, and was admitted to the Florida Bar in 2001.
Once admitted to the Florida Bar, Jose took a position as an associate with a small size law office located in Coral Gables, Florida. His area of practice concentrated on preparing civil cases for trial. While at the Coral Gables law office, Jose assisted clients in matters ranging from personal injury to commercial litigation and contractual disputes.
Jose Bejel next accepted a position as an associate with a medium size law office located in Hialeah, Florida. Jose’s area of practice expanded to include areas of insurance litigation, first party litigation, class action litigation, actions for declaratory decree in conjunction with conducting numerous personal injury and P.I.P. trials.
In August 2004, Jose accepted a position with the law firm of Sutton & Montoto, P.A., now the Sutton Law Group, located in South Miami, Florida. As a member of the Sutton Law Group, Jose’s practices in the areas of Real Estate Law (transactions, foreclosures, breach of contract and related claims), Family Law (division of property, child custody, spousal support, child support), Criminal Law (misdemeanor charges, felony charges, forfeitures, and more...), and Agriculture Law (damaged crop coverage, land use, rules and regulations, and more...). In conjunction with the above, Jose continues to be involved with many area’s of the firm’s practice including civil litigation, personal injury litigation, contractual disputes, probate and estate cases, wrongful death, professional liability and other consumer related claims.
Jose Bejel, Esq. is currently a member of the Florida Bar and is admitted to practice in the State Courts of Florida. Jose is also a member of the United States District Courts for the Southern District of Florida and is also a member of the Florida Justice Association, American Bar Association, Dade County Bar Association, and Cuban American Bar Association.
Brett B. Trembly, Esq., is a recent addition to the Sutton Law Group. Brett earned a Juris Doctor from the University of Miami School of Law in May, 2008, and joined the firm as an associate in September upon passing the Florida Bar Exam. During law school, Brett was a member of the Advanced Trial Competition team, participating in mock trial events around the state and country. Brett finished runner-up in the Fall 2007 University of Miami Mock Trial Competition, was a semi-finalist in the 21 team 2007 Clyde C. Atkins Moot Court Competition, and in 2006 reached the quarter finals in the 32 team 1L Moot Court Competition.
Brett graduated summa cum laude from Eastern New Mexico University in 2005, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and a minor in Spanish. During college Brett served as Student Body President, Vice-President of the Associated Students of New Mexico, and President of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. In addition to performing well in law school competitions and in the classroom, Brett remained dedicated to taking a leading role in law school: Brett was a Student Bar Association Senator, Vice-Chair of the Law Activity Fees Allocation Committee, a member of the Wellness Center Advisory Board, and Chair of the University of Miami School of Law and Medicine 2008 Dean's Cup, for which the Dean of Students awarded Brett with a leadership award. Brett strongly believes in giving back to the community through pro bono efforts. While in law school, Brett completed over 100 hours of outside community service per year and participated in UM Law’s HOPE program. Brett continues to donate time and money to philanthropic endeavors, serving as President of the South Florida Alumni Association of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, as District President for the South Florida region of Kappa Sigma, and as a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity Legal Commission; participating in Susan G. Komen Relay for Life and various other charity events, including the Coconut Grove Crawl for Cancer; and as a consultant for a charitable management foundation.
